The business · Lesson 04 · 5 min

Side business or full business

A route can start around the job you already have, or it can be the job. Either one works. The difference is not ambition. It is which days you can promise, every week, and what happens on the week you can't.

The days you can promise

A pool on a route gets the same day every week. That promise is what the customer is paying for, more than the chlorine. So the first question is not how many pools you want. It is which days you can be on the road, rain or not, busy week at the other job or not.

Count the pools those days can hold, with the drive between them. A side route that fits one day a week is a real business, as long as it is the same day. A route that only happens when the other job allows it is a favor, and customers stop paying for favors.

Insurance, and the jump to full time

A side business is still a business. The insurance has to fit the work you are charging for, even when it is a few pools on a Saturday. The lesson on insurance and your state covers what to ask.

Go full time when the route already behaves like one. The pools pay on time. The price is in writing. A sick day has a plan, whether that is a person who can cover or a customer list that knows you will come the next day. If any of those is missing, more pools will not fix it. They will make it louder.
