The business · Lesson 06 · 5 min
Insurance and your state
Check your state. Rules are not the same everywhere. Some states license pool service. Some do not. A city can add its own rule on top. A national checklist would be a lie.
What to ask, and who to ask
Call the state board, or the association the working pros in your town already belong to. Ask two questions: does this state require a license for weekly pool service, and what insurance do the people actually running routes carry?
Write the answers down with the date and the name of the person who gave them. That page is your checklist. It is local, and it is the one that counts.
Liability, and the truck
Carry general liability before you step on a customer's pad as a business. One cracked valve is an ordinary Tuesday until it is your company that has to answer for it.
If the truck is how the business gets to the pool, the auto policy has to know that. A personal policy often stops at the idea of you driving to a friend's house. Tell the agent you are charging for the stops. If they say the policy still fits, ask them to say it in writing.
