The equipment pad
The pad is four things: the pump, the filter, the valves, and the pressure gauge. Learn them on a pool you already know. A strange pad is readable once those four are familiar.
The pump
It should sound like it did last week. A new rattle, a squeal, or a housing that is hot and silent is the thing you stop for. You are not there to rebuild it on the first visit. You are there to notice it and say so.
The basket in front of the pump catches what the skimmer missed. Empty it. A stuffed basket is a pump working too hard, and a pump working too hard is next month's replacement.
Pressure, leaks, valves
Write the pressure number down. The number matters next to last week's number. A slow climb usually means the filter is loading up. A sudden drop can mean the pump is starving for water, often a clogged basket or a closed valve.
Look for water where the pad was dry. A drip at a fitting is ordinary until it is the call you did not want. Valves point the water. If you did not move one and the water is going somewhere new, somebody else did. Put it back only if you know where it belongs, and write down what you found.
